The movie was written and directed by Priyadarshan. Chithram was produced by KRP Pillai and was distributed under the banner of Shirdi Sai Release. The movie was released on 23 December 1988. During it’s theatrical run, the movie earned a record amount of Rs 6 crores at the box office.

One of the major attractions of the movie was it’s music. All the songs in this film turned into evergreen classics. Kannur Rajan composed the songs and the amazingly haunting background scoring was done by Johnson master. The DOP of the film was S Kumar and editing was handled by N Gopalakrishnan.

Nedumudi Venu, Ranjini, Maniyan Pillai Raju, Sreenivasan, Lissy, Poornam Vishwanathan, M G Soman, Shanavas, Innocent, Thikkurishi and many others were part of the cast.

The movie’s plot revolves around Vishnu who had to act as the husband of Kalyani in front of her father. He does it for money and Kalyani’s uncle Kaimal is the brains behind the whole plan. At first Kalyani and Vishnu hate each other but later both developed a kind of liking for each other which turns to love and decide to marry.

But at that time a stranger comes in their life and then it is revealed that Vishnu is an escaped prisoner who was sentenced to death penalty and that stranger is the warden of the prison from where Vishnu had escaped. He reaches there to arrest Vishnu and take him along with him to complete the death penalty. The climax of the movie is one of the most haunting scenes in Mollywood history.

Latest addition to the camp is the National Award winning actor Samuthirakani. He will be playing the role of Jimson in the film. Sujith Shankar had played the role in Malayalam. Samuthirakani worked with Priyadarshan in last year’s blockbuster movie Oppam alongside Mohanlal. Samuthirakani played the role of a cold blooded serial killer and his performance in the movie was highly appreciated.

Maheshinte Prathikaram’s core plot is about the protagonist taking a revenge after being thrashed by an outsider in his locality. It is a very realistic take on the events happening in the protagonist’s life. Eventhough the plot has revenge as it’s core element, it is told with natural and realistic humour.

The movie was a huge success, both critically and commercially. Fahadh Faasil played the lead role in the movie directed by Dileesh Pothen. It won numerous accolades including two National Awards; for the best feature film in Malayalam and best screenplay for Shyam Pushkaran. Interestingly, Priyadarshan was the jury chairman of last year’s National Film Awards.

The director had informed that the Tamil verison will have some slight changes in the script. They will be tweaking the plot slightly to suit the sensibilities of the Tamil audience. There will be much more prominence to humour in the Tamil version.

Namitha Pramod will be making her Tamil debut by reprising the role of Aparna Balamurali from the original. MS Bhaskar will be playing the role essayed by Alencier Ley Lopez. The movie will start rolling on July 15 and will be shot extensively in Theni and Cumbam regions.

Priyadarshan has retained his technicians from Oppam. NK Ekambaram has been roped in as the DOP while MS Ayyappan Nair will be editing the movie. Santhosh T Kuruvilla of Moonshot Entertainment is funding this yet-to-be-titled movie.
