ആ വര്‍ഷത്തെ മൂന്ന് നാഷണല്‍ അവാര്‍ഡുകലാണ് ഭരതം നേടിയത്. ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച നടനുള്ള അവാര്‍ഡ് മോഹന്‍ലാലിനും മികച്ച ഗായകനുള്ള പുരസ്‌കാരം കെജെ യേശുദാസിനും ലഭിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ ചിത്രത്തിന് സ്‌പെഷ്യല്‍ ജൂറി പുരസ്‌കാരവും ലഭിച്ചു.

എന്നാല്‍ മോഹന്‍ലാലിന് അവാര്‍ഡ് നല്‍കിയതിന് എതിരെ അന്ന്‍ വിവാദങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. കല്ലൂര്‍ രാമനാഥന്‍ എന്ന സംഗീതജ്ഞനായി നെടുമുടി വേണുവും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അനുജനായ കല്ലൂര്‍ ഗോപിനാഥനായി മോഹന്‍ലാലുമാണ് ഭരതത്തില്‍ പ്രധാന വേഷത്തില്‍ എത്തിയത്.

നായകനായ മോഹന്‍ലാലിനെ പോലെ പ്രധാന്യമുള്ള വേഷമായിരുന്നു നെടുമുടി വേണുവിനും. മോഹന്‍ലാലിനെക്കാള്‍ മികച്ച പ്രകടനം നെടുമുടി വേണുവിന്‍റെ എന്നായിരുന്നു ഒരുകൂട്ടരുടെ വാദം.

എന്നാല്‍ തന്നെക്കാള്‍ മികച്ചത് മോഹന്‍ലാലിന്‍റെ പ്രകടനം തന്നെയാണെന്ന് നെടുമുടി വേണു തന്നെ പറഞ്ഞതോടെ ആ വിവാദങ്ങള്‍ കെട്ടടങ്ങി.

“ഞാന്‍ അഭിനയിച്ച കഥാപാത്രം കല്ലൂര്‍ രാമനാഥന് നടക്കാന്‍ ഒറ്റ വഴി മാത്രമേയുള്ളൂ. എന്നാല്‍ മോഹന്‍ലാല്‍ അവതരിപ്പിച്ച കല്ലൂര്‍ ഗോപിനാഥന്‍ അങ്ങനെയല്ല. നൂല്‍പ്പാലത്തിലൂടെയാണ് ഗോപിനാഥന്റെ യാത്ര. അഭിനയത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും സൂക്ഷ്മാംശം നിര്‍വ്വഹിച്ചത് മോഹന്‍ലാലാണ്. അത് പ്രത്യക്ഷത്തില്‍ നോക്കുമ്പോള്‍ മനസ്സിലാവില്ല. കഥാപാത്രത്തിന്റെ ഉള്ളിലേക്ക് ചൂഴ്ന്നിറങ്ങി നോക്കിയാലേ ആ പ്രകടനത്തിന്റെ അപാരത തിരിച്ചറിയൂ.” എന്നായിരുന്നു വിവാദങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് നെടുമുടി വേണു നല്‍കിയ മറുപടി.

The movie was written and directed by Priyadarshan. Chithram was produced by KRP Pillai and was distributed under the banner of Shirdi Sai Release. The movie was released on 23 December 1988. During it’s theatrical run, the movie earned a record amount of Rs 6 crores at the box office.

One of the major attractions of the movie was it’s music. All the songs in this film turned into evergreen classics. Kannur Rajan composed the songs and the amazingly haunting background scoring was done by Johnson master. The DOP of the film was S Kumar and editing was handled by N Gopalakrishnan.

Nedumudi Venu, Ranjini, Maniyan Pillai Raju, Sreenivasan, Lissy, Poornam Vishwanathan, M G Soman, Shanavas, Innocent, Thikkurishi and many others were part of the cast.

The movie’s plot revolves around Vishnu who had to act as the husband of Kalyani in front of her father. He does it for money and Kalyani’s uncle Kaimal is the brains behind the whole plan. At first Kalyani and Vishnu hate each other but later both developed a kind of liking for each other which turns to love and decide to marry.

But at that time a stranger comes in their life and then it is revealed that Vishnu is an escaped prisoner who was sentenced to death penalty and that stranger is the warden of the prison from where Vishnu had escaped. He reaches there to arrest Vishnu and take him along with him to complete the death penalty. The climax of the movie is one of the most haunting scenes in Mollywood history.

The film’s plot revolves around a local thief named Pavithran. He was called ‘Pavithran, the thief’ by the public eventhough his thefts were of small nature and one which is not much harmful for the society. So in order to escape from the title of a thief he goes to a person named Mammachan to request for a job in his mill. But Mammachan refuses to give him any job there. Pavithran also meets a merchant in the town who is a crooked one. Later, a theft occurs at Mammachan’s house and that incident changes the life of ‘Pavithran, the thief’ and which seals his fate.

Nedumudi Venu played the protagonist ‘Pavithran’ in the film and gave a sterling performance playing that character. Adoor Bhasi played the character of the crooked merchant and actor Bharath Gopi essayed the role of Mammachan.
Other artists who were the part of the film are Beena, Devi, Prem Prakash, Subhashini and Bhasakara Kuruppu.

‘Peruvazhiyambalam’ and ‘Oridathoru Phayalvan’ were the first two films of Padmarajan which were released before ‘Kallan Pavithran’. Both the movies were critically acclaimed but could not reap commercial success.
