Yavanika is widely regarded as one of the best ever mystery thrillers made in Indian film industry and for some section of critics it is one of the best in world cinema. Directed by master filmmaker K G George, this film had received great commercial as well as critical reception during that time. The movie was co-written by K G George and S L Puram Sadanandan. The film was produced by Henry and it had won the Kerala State award for best film that year.

Yavanika was released on 30th April 1982. The DOP of the movie was Ramachandra Babu and M B Sreenivasan handled the music department of the film. Mammootty’s first notable character was seen in this film and his portrayal of the investigating officer named Jacob Eeraly was well appreciated by the critics. He won the critics award for best supporting actor that year as well.

The film tells the story that happens related to the missing of a Tabala player named Ayyappan (played by the legendary Bharath Gopi) who is working with a travelling drama group. His mysterious disappearing later brings out many inside stories that has happened on backstage of the drama troupe. There are many suspects behind Ayyappan’s disappearance as he is very unpopular among the people who know him and also an alcoholic and criminal. The other actors apart from Bharath Gopi and Mammootty in this film are Thilakan, Nedumudi Venu, Jagathy Sreekumar, Jalaja, Ashokan, Venu Nagavally, Kuttyedathu Vilasini, Thodupuzha Vasanthi and Sreenivasan.

Ayyappan is considered as one of the best ever roles played by the great actor Bharath Gopi. Mammootty also made a lasting impression with his performance in Yavanika and that paved way for many solid roles in the future. Bharath Gopi, known for his perfection, learned how to play Tabala prior to the movie’s shoot.

Yavanika is considered as a lesson for filmmaking as it used the Rashomon effect or that way of story telling. It is now a reference for cinema students in various national film institutes and many film academies.

One of the major attractions of the movie was it’s music. All the songs in this film turned into evergreen classics. Kannur Rajan composed the songs and the amazingly haunting background scoring was done by Johnson master. The DOP of the film was S Kumar and editing was handled by N Gopalakrishnan.

Nedumudi Venu, Ranjini, Maniyan Pillai Raju, Sreenivasan, Lissy, Poornam Vishwanathan, M G Soman, Shanavas, Innocent, Thikkurishi and many others were part of the cast.

At first Kalyani and Vishnu hate each other but later both developed a kind of liking for each other which turns to love and decide to marry.

But at that time a stranger comes in their life and then it is revealed that Vishnu is an escaped prisoner who was sentenced to death penalty and that stranger is the warden of the prison from where Vishnu had escaped. Rajavinte Makan is an epic one in the history of Mollywood films in the sense that through this film a new superstar was established in Mollywood. It was the film film which had given the tagline of superstar to Mohanlal and later as we all know he had gone on to becomes the biggest ever star and crowd puller Mollywood had ever witnessed.

And now he become the universal star from Mollywood and still he remains the best in crowd pulling capacity and in star value. He is the actor/star with most number of blockbuster and record breaking or record creating hits in Mollywood and his journey of that sort of creating records at box office had really begun from this mass entertainer directed by Thampi Kannamthanam. This character was initally offered Mammootty but he rejected to do it citing the reason that the director was not good enough.

But when the offer came to Mohanlal he accepted it with both hands and the history was born there and that film paved the way for Mohanlal to become the superstar of the. Rajeev’s story was developed into a screenplay by Dennis Joseph. The movie was produced by Sharon Pictures. It was distributed by Jubilee
Release and become the highest grosser of that year.

Music for the film is composed by S P Venkitesh and DOP was Jananan Vincent. The section of editing was handled by K Sankunni and the film got released on 17th july 1986.The film is one the class actions films ever made in Mollywood which tells the story of an underworld don named Vincent Gomas and Kerala’s Chief Minister Krishnadas. The film ends as a tragedy and that too in a heroic way with the death of the hero Vincent Gomas and that experiment was really a bold one in Mollywood and that really paid off as well.

Mohanlal’s each dialogue in the film were sensational and his style of subtle acting, stylized but easy movements and sparkling looks with the eye made that character an epic one. The main actors in the film apart from Mohanlal who played Vincent Gomas was Ratheesh who played N Krishnadas, Suresh Gopi as Kumar, Ambika as Nancy etc. The film had ran over 200 days all over kerala.

Martial arts is used as the core subject for many films in Hollywood, Bollywood and even in our neighboring film industry Kollywood. But Mollywood has not had many films that centres around martial arts. The disinterest in making such films can be attributed to the lack of availability of actors who can do stunts with precision and perfection. But Mohanlal stepped in and then happened Yodha. He is known for his dedication and commitment to strive for that extra yard of perfection. Mohanlal learned the martial art form of Kung fu for playing his part in the film. Yodha emerged as a huge success.

Jagathy Sreekumar’s spectacular perfomance as Appukuttan, and his hilarious one liners are hugely popular among Malayalis even today. His chemistry with Mohanlal has always been great and it was no different in Yodha. Mohanlal is arguably as the best ever action hero in Mollywood and his performance in Yodha was much talked about.

Yodha was released as an Onam release in 1992 with a budget of Rs 2 crore and got great returns at the box office. As it was a big budget movie, it had to settle with a super hit status. The film was directed by Sangeeth Sivan. Sasidharan Arattuvazhi wrote the screenplay for the director’s story. The main backdrop of the story was in Nepal and dealt with the lives and legends of Lamas.

Cinematography was handled by Santhosh Sivan. Music was composed by AR Rahman and incidentally Yodha is the only Malayalam film in his career. The film was produced and distributed by Saga Films. Editing was done by Sreekar Prasad, for which he won the Kerala State award that year. Urvashi, Puneet Isar, Madhubala, Master Sidhartha, MS Tripunithura, Jagannadha Varma, Sukumari and many others were part of the cast.

‘Padayottam’ has a great significance in the history of Mollywood as it was the first Indian film to be indigenously shot in the 70 mm film format. This historic movie was directed by Jijo Punnoose and produced by Navodaya Appachan. The movie was a big success at the box office but not a blockbuster as another movie, Aarambham released along with Padayottam also emerged as a winner.

Padayottam had a plethora of stars that included all the leading actors of that time- Prem Nazir, Madhu, Mohanlal, Mammootty, Shankar, Thikkurisi Sukumaran Nair, Poornima Jayaram, Lakshmi, Meena Kumari and Sukumari. Other supporting actors like Pappu, Alummoodan, GK Pillai, Nellikkodu Bhaskaran, Achankunju and N Govindan Kutty were also part of the cast.

Padayottam was shot on a big canvas with a budget of Rs 50 lakhs. N Govindan Kutty, who wrote the movie based on the famous English novel ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ by Alexandre Dumas. Guna Singh composed the music and lyrics were penned down by Kavalam Narayana Panicker. Ramachandra Babu cranked the camera while TR Shekhar handled the edits. The movie was distributed by Navodaya Films and was released on 1 September 1982.

There are many interesting facts related to this film. Mohanlal acted as Mammootty’s son in the movie. Normally Mohanlal used to play the negative roles, but in this film it was kind of a role reversal as Mammootty essayed a negative character. Another interesting fact is that Aarambham, the success of which stopped Padayottam from emerging a blockbuster, is also a Prem Nazeer starrer.
